Digital Imaging (1 of 3): Photography Composition Principles

Introduction

In this assignment you will identify four camera composition techniques. The four techniques are:

• Rule of Thirds
• Leading Lines
• Framing
• And your own selection

There are many different composition techniques, so you will also select the fourth technique. It is entirely up to you to determine which technique will be your fourth choice. Consider a technique that you think would create a photo that would most likely complement an effective layout and design. 

You can search online to explore information about these techniques, or you can click here to check out a provided site. 

For this assignment, you can either use PowerPoint or Google Slides or an application of your choice (just make sure you can embed, link, or share the final product). As you gather your information, store your material in your chosen application. You will probably require two to three slides for each technique.

What are the design principles?

It is important that you become familiar with design principles. The principles you will explore are ones that designers take into consideration when creating layout designs. The combination of these principles helps to create a more appealing and attractive design layout for the viewer/audience.

Balance - a distribution of equal visual weight

Alignment - an arrangement forming a straight line

Emphasis - an accentuation of importance

Proportion - a scaling of objects in relation to each other

Movement - a directed path of optical motion

Pattern - an orderly repetition of an object

Contrast - a juxtaposition that accentuates difference

Unity - a harmonious arrangement of elements

Digital Imaging (3 of 3): Your Own Design: Magazine Cover Assignment

Assignment Details

For this assignment you will plan and design your own magazine cover. Consider an area of interest when you are deciding what type of magazine cover to design (sports, music, entertainment, etc.).

You must show evidence of planning and include a written part (your rationale) that discusses how you have used the principles of design (refer to your handout):

• Balance/Contrast
• Rhythm/Repetition (Movement/Pattern)
• Emphasis/Alignment
• Unity/Proximity (Proportion)

Your magazine cover must have:

• A title for your magazine
• A dominant image(s)/artwork
• At least 4 different font styles
• At least 10 layers total (including text layers)

• Date and Price (or "free" if applicable)
• Design credit (your name - small print in one of the bottom covers)
